đŸ–„ïž How To Fix A Monitor That Isn’t Connecting

If your screen turns on but says things like “No signal”, “Scanning for signal”, or goes into standby mode, don’t worry! This is a very common issue and is usually quick to fix.
Follow the steps below in order. You can stop as soon as the screen starts working.

Step 1: Check the monitor is on the correct input

  1. Use the buttons on the monitor to open its menu
  2. Look for Input or Source
  3. Try selecting:
    1. Auto (if available)
    2. The cable you’re using (HDMI / DisplayPort)

Step 2: Unplug and reconnect the cables

A loose cable can stop the signal even if it looks connected.
  1. Unplug the video cable from:
    1. The monitor
    2. The computer or docking station
  2. Plug it back in firmly at both ends
  3. If there are multiple ports on the computer, try a different one

Step 3: Try a different cable (if you have one)

Cables can stop working over time or get damaged if desks are moved.
  1. If possible, try another HDMI or DisplayPort cable
  2. If your monitor and computer support it, try a different connection type

Step 4: Check Windows display settings

Sometimes the screen is connected but not turned on in Windows.
  1. Right-click on the desktop and choose Display settings
  2. Click Detect
  3. Scroll down to Multiple displays
  4. Make sure Extend these displays is selected

Step 5: Use the display shortcut

This quickly resets how Windows sends the picture to your screens.
  1. Press Windows + P on your keyboard
  2. Choose Extend

Step 6: Power cycle

This helps if the monitor hasn’t been used for a while.
  1. Shut down the computer
  2. Turn off the monitor
  3. Unplug the power cables from both for 30 seconds
  4. Plug everything back in
  5. Turn the monitor on first, then start the computer
Info

If it still doesn’t work...

If none of the steps above help:
  1. Let IT know what message the monitor shows
  2. Tell them what cable you’re using (HDMI or DisplayPort)
  3. If possible, mention whether the monitor works with another computer
