📄🔧PDFs Appear Corrupted When Shared Between Apps

What’s going on?

Sometimes a PDF that looks totally fine in one app can appear corrupted, blank, or unreadable when someone opens it in Adobe Acrobat. Confusing? Very. Luckily, the file usually isn’t broken — it just needs a quick conversion.

What you might notice

  1. The PDF opens and works normally in some PDF apps
  2. The same file looks broken or unreadable in Adobe Acrobat
  3. Re-downloading or re-sharing the file doesn’t help

Why this happens

Some PDF apps save files using a format called XFA (XML Forms Architecture). XFA is an older, dynamic PDF format often used for interactive forms.

Adobe Acrobat doesn’t always play nicely with XFA files created or edited by non‑Adobe apps. When that happens, Acrobat may show the PDF as corrupted even though the content is still there.

How to fix it

You can fix this by converting the file into a standard (non‑XFA) PDF before sharing it with anyone who uses Adobe Acrobat.

Steps

  1. Open the PDF in PDF Gear (or any non‑Adobe PDF app)
  2. Go to Print
  3. Choose Print to PDF 
  4. Save the newly created PDF
This “print to PDF” step flattens the document and removes the XFA formatting, making it fully compatible with Adobe Acrobat.

  1. You only need to do this for PDFs that will be shared externally or opened in Adobe Acrobat         
  2. PDFs used internally within the same app usually don’t need conversion
  3. The new PDF will no longer support dynamic or interactive form features
